Saturday kicked off the weekend with our under 20’s taking on Old Crescent in the A.I.L
Division 2 league. Following their loss to Clonmel the previous week in which they did
manage
to pick up 2 bonus points thanks to a last minute kick, the team were eager to make a
mends.
However again like many of our other teams we did not start playing till after the initial
quarter.
Crescent got in for a converted try, in which they showed how a backline should operate
with
quick hands enabling their 2nd centre to take advantage of unnecessary gaps in our
defence.
Openside Gearoid Phelan was beginning to take a grip on the game and was frustrating
Crescent’s efforts by repeatedly stealing possession backed up by some excellent
defending
from Barry McInerny. Sadly however Barry had to end the game when he fell awkwardly,
Richmond wish him a speedy recovery. So the first half ended with us down by 7 points;
however we had the aid of the wind in the second half so all was not lost. We played the
majority of the second half just outside Crescents 22, the Clubs top try-scorer Maurice O
Shea showed a clean pair of heels to get in for yet another try. Following the introduction of
Tomas O Brien, another try was scored, this time Stewart Madden getting in, neither try’s
were
successful and one penalty which was taken in the first half with the aid of one of the more
conventional kicking tee’s but seemed to resemble a traffic cone was inevitably
unsuccessful,
Kicking coach Paddy McNamara was not impressed. A late surge came from Crescent but
Richmond held out and they just about deserved their victory over a determined Crescent
team. Best for Richmond were Alex Simpson, Mike Gallagher and Wayne Cronin. This is
our
first under 20’s team in a number of years and credit must go to their coaching team of
Paddy
McNamara, Derek Mitchell, Myles Halpin and Brian Bennett. Our under 18’s played the
following morning against UL Bohemians, picking up from a victory against Ennis the
previous
week, the team were determined to continue winning ways. Conditions were absolutely
terrible, strong winds and torrential like rain came down in the canal but it did not
discourage
either team. UL Boh’s are a good side and with players like Eoin Nichollas and Finbarr
Ryan,
Richmond knew they would have to have a solid defence, and that they did. Man of the
match
Richard Healy was outstanding and throughout the match he continued to thwart the
Robins
attack. We crossed over twice, with Ronan O Dea and Darren McNamara crossing the line,
Adam Kennedy was successful with one of the kicks, the match ended 12-0. Best for the
18’s
were Richard Healy, Darren McNamara and Tomas O Brien while Owen O Sullivan made
his
comeback in the green jersey. Richmond RFC would like to congratulate its recent Munster
representatives, in the Munster 18’s schools inside centre Micheal Kelleher and winger
Craig
O Hanlon were capped, for the Munster 19’s prop Darren Kavanagh, second row Darragh
Frawley and winger Gareth O Hanlon were also capped. All of these players came up
through
the ranks and started off their careers under the watchful eye of Sean O Connor, Bryan
Hanley and Frankie O Brien, congratulations.
